Chapter

Thirteen

Her hands were shaking as she opened the door to her apartment. It was late—technically early—and she needed to sleep. But she couldn’t get Nick’s words out of her head.

Sleep now, and she knew what would happen. The memories would come. Nightmares.

She’d see snatches of what happened between her and Nick. Bits and pieces of her previous life with Priam.

If she could grab hold of the dream and bring it into the waking, she would remember. She’d understand. She’d know.

But she didn’t want to. Not anymore.

Not now that she knew it was horrible.

She tossed her purse onto the couch and went into the kitchen to pour a glass of wine, managing instead to spill it all over the counter. Her hands were shaking too damn much.

Frustrated, she grabbed her phone and dialed Rhiana. One ring, then another, then she slammed the phone down, realizing with sudden clarity that it wasn’t her friend she wanted to talk to. Realizing more that she didn’t want to talk at all.

She wanted to be held, to be stroked and touched and soothed, and there was only one person who could do that for her.

Rand.

Just the thought of him made her feel steadier, and she hurried to her computer to look up his cellphone number, hoping he’d come to her, knowing she’d be devastated if he didn’t.

Every Orlando’s client was assigned a unique number for accounting purposes—drinks, takings, and the like. Not only did that make it easier on her staff, but Lissa had learned a long time ago that clients spent more money when they weren’t opening their wallets.

She’d always been proud of the decision to implement that system, especially the decision to use mobile numbers rather than randomly generated codes. Now she considered herself a genius as she logged in, found Rand’s name, and immediately pulled up his number.

She hesitated only long enough to scold herself for acting like a nervous human teenager, then dialed.

The call connected on the third ring, and she didn’t wait for him to answer. “Rand?”

A pause, then, “Who is this?”

But it wasn’t Rand’s voice. It was a woman.

It was Mia.

She slammed the phone down, realizing she was breathing hard, her skin flushed and her chest tight. Dammit.

Her reaction was bullshit, and so was the idea that she needed someone. She’d taken care of herself all of this life. Herself, and dozens of other women. She didn’t need a man to coddle her, least of all a man who would share a bed with another woman only hours after he’d left her side.

They’d made no promises, no commitments; they hadn’t even formally exchanged phone numbers. But still, there were certain rules, and Rand had just stomped all over them.

Well, fine. Chalk that up to an object lesson in what she ought to already know. That she couldn’t rely on anyone, much less a man. And the only one in the world who was truly going to watch out for her was herself.
